Most tour companies have not modified their cancellation and
refund policies, but more than half expect to do so if the Covid-19 virus
continues is global spread, according to a survey of National Tour Association
members.
The survey of 200 members conducted March 2 to 6, showed
that 78% had not yet changed their policies, but 58% anticipate they will if
outbreaks continue.
Additionally, the responses from 104 tour operators showed
that 55% said they had received cancellations from customers, which they said
were mostly fear-based rather that in response to mandates from governments or
organizations.
Twenty-one percent said their company was postponing
departures, while just 10% said they were postponing or adjusting itineraries.
Nearly one-quarter of operators, 23%, reported seeing no coronavirus effect on
their business or their tour programs.
“The survey results are consistent with what we’ve heard
from members within the NTA Owners Network and on Engage, our online community
page,” said Catherine Prather, NTA president. “What’s encouraging during a
troubling time is how members support each other by sharing their policies and
strategies. They are focused on moving forward and coming through this, while
also keeping the health and safety of their travelers as a top priority.”
