SBE launches food delivery business

Lifestyle hospitality company SBE is launching a “ghost
kitchen” to provide employment for some of its furloughed employees.

Ghost kitchens prepare food for delivery service.

SBE plans to hire 1,000 workers under its C3 (Creating
Culinary Communities) subsidiary, with prioritization given to furloughed
employees from SBE’s hotel, restaurant and nightlife operations. About 50% of
the positions will be concentrated in the Los Angeles area, with the remainder
spread across New York City, Las Vegas, Miami and San Francisco.

Launched in partnership with Accor and Simon Properties
earlier this year, C3 bills itself as “an incubator of limited-service culinary
brands,” specializing in food halls and mobile food delivery. The brand plans
to open 138 ghost kitchens by the end of 2020 to meet high demand for food-delivery
service amid the Covid-19 pandemic.

“I’m proud that SBE has built a business and strategy that
took into account situations like this,” said SBE founder and CEO Sam Nazarian
in a statement. “These jobs will deliver a steady paycheck and job security. As
this crisis disrupts normal patterns of dining and consumption, I am also
pleased that SBE’s ghost kitchens will be able to support national efforts to
keep people safe, healthy, and at home both during and after this health
crisis.”

SBE anticipates expanding its C3 team to as many as 3,000
employees by the end of next year. In addition to focusing on mobile food
delivery, the company is working on building out synergies between its ghost
kitchens, hotel restaurants and in-room dining operations.
