WTTC postpones Global Summit

The World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC) is postponing
until fall its Global Summit, which was to be held in Cancun in April.

WTTC said that although the Mexican state of Quintana Roo
currently has no known cases of Covid-19 coronavirus, moving its annual meeting
to later this year “is the right decision to enable our sector to focus its
resources on managing the crisis.”

“The decision was made after careful consideration by WTTC,
our operating committee and the government of Quintana Roo, in solidarity to
governments, countries and organizations which are being affected by Covid-19,”
WTTC said in a statement.

The organization also said that Cancun had originally
requested hosting the summit in the autumn to ensure the event’s success. WTTC
only made Cancun the site of its summit in January after canceling the one it
had planned in San Juan to enable Puerto Rico to use its resources for tourism
promotion instead of the summit.

The Global Summit in Cancun was to be held from April 21 to
23. WTTC said it is working with the government of Quintana Roo to solidify new
dates.
