Walks near Truro: Enjoy fresh air and seaside with coast walks in Cornwall

During lockdown, Britons were told that they could only enjoy one hour of exercise each day. For many, this meant exploring their local area. But despite lockdown restrictions now being eased, Britons seemed to have carried on the walking tradition, with many now opting for a ramble rather than watching TV. Here are five of the most beautiful walks to enjoy that are close to Truro.

1. Truro and the Old Newham Railway

This is a circular walk around Truro that goes along the river and into the town centre.

The route joins the track along the Newham railway which remains disused and is now home to plenty of wildlife.

How far is the walk?

The walk is around 4.4 miles, but there are plenty of shortcuts you can take if you get tired.

How long will it take to complete?

The walk will take around an hour and a half, but if you fancy stopping off at a cafe or pub for a spot of lunch it could take a little longer to complete.

As the walk is in Truro, if you’re staying there it’s just on your doorstep.

The walk passes the Royal Cornwall Museum and cathedral which are great spots if you want to get to know Truro’s history.

There are a plethora of bars and cafes near the end of the route which are perfect for breakfast, lunch or dinner depending on when you’re walking.

2. Truro to Roseworthy

This is a beautiful country walk that has some stunning views of the River Kenwyn.

Penrose Water Gardens to Ninnis are particularly great for a break.

How far is the walk?

The walk is 6.4 miles long and is moderately easy.

However, one of the paths runs along the top of a bank and involves climbing over tree trunks.

How long will it take to complete?

The walk will take you a couple of hours to complete spending on your pace and whether you stop off for some lunch on your way.

3. Feock to Devoran

This is a circular walk to the Victorian-engineered town of Devoran which was once the largest mining port in Cornwall.

How far is the walk?

The walk is 6.1 miles-long and begins at Feock Church car park.

How long will it take to complete?

The walk should only take a few hours but could take longer depending on your desired pace.

How long does it take to get to?

Feock is thirteen minutes by car from Truro.

Public transport via bus is available but it will take around half an hour.

Is there anything nearby?

There is plenty of bird life along the creeks which are perfect for any avid bird-watchers.

The Church and holy well of St Feock are also along the way.

4. Grampound to Trewithen

This is another circular walk through Trewithen Gardens from Grampound via the hamlet of Golden.

The walk is famous for Trewithen gardens which are known for being horticulturally beautiful.

How far is the walk?

The walk is around five miles long.

How long will it take to complete?

The walk will take around an hour to complete but could take more or less time depending on whether you want to take a shortcut.

How long does it take to get to?

Grampound is around 15 minutes away from Truro by car.

There is also a bus route that takes around 20 minutes.

Is there anything nearby?

The Historic market town of Grampound and Heritage Centre are definitely worth a visit.

The walk follows a lane from Grampound to Creed church where the churchyard is carpeted in primroses in early spring.

5. Callestick and Ventongimps

The route follows byways, bridleways and footpaths through woods and fields to Little Callstock.

The return route goes via Ventongimps, passing wildlife reserves.

How far is the walk?

The walk is another circular walk that is around 5.3 miles long.

How long will it take to complete?

The walk will roughly take around an hour or so depending on your pace.

There are shortcuts if you don’t want to complete the whole walk.

How long does it take to get to?

It’s a 15-minute car drive from Truro to Callestick.

Is there anything nearby?

Ice cream is made at Callestick Farm which is definitely worth a visit if you have a sweet tooth.

There is also an optional diversion to Healey’s Cyder Farm where tours of the cider-making process, museum and cellars are available.
