Pre-workout is the name for nutritional supplements that give you a burst of energy before you hit the gym. It’s popular among fitness enthusiasts who want to take in ingredients to help them push harder and longer and get the most out of their workout sessions. Express.co.uk chatted to Shivraj Bassi, CEO & Founder of Innermost Innermost | Nutritional Supplements for Body & Mind, to find out everything you need to know about pre-workout and how to take it.

Pre-workout isn’t essential, but taking these powdered supplements can help you to work harder when you’re exercising.

Shivraj said: “While pre-workouts aren’t necessary, having consistently high energy levels in today’s increasingly busy world isn’t always possible.

While taking diluted pre-workout is the done thing, TikTokers have sparked a trend of taking pre-workout dry in one scoop.

TikToker @briannakaylynn said: “It has come to my attention that most people don’t know how to dry the scoop, so I’m going to teach you how to do it without making a mess.

“Fill up the scoop, tilt your head not all the way back but a little bit forward so you can still see the scooper.”

She then demonstrates that you should also put your tongue to the roof of your mouth.

She said this hack stops the powder from going back into your throat and making you choke and spit the powder out.

“Second most importantly, you’re going to tap the scoop on your teeth to make sure you get all of the powder out.”

Then, drink your water and swallow the powder and water.

Is dry scooping pre-workout good for you?

Although dry scooping has blown up on TikTok recently, Shivraj does not advise people to copy it.

He said: “TikTok is an app that has been known for potentially harmful fitness tips and tricks.

“Essentially, dry scooping skips the diluting stage and users can be seen pouring the pre-workout powder directly into their mouths, then gulping water straight after.

“The big question at the moment is whether it’s safe or not.”

The main risk with dry scooping is breathing in the powder and the powder clumping together in your throat increasing the risk of choking and suffocation, according to Shivraj

He added: “Also, some cheaper pre-workouts on the market contain high levels of caffeine.

“Dry scooping can put your body through stress, increased heart rate, dehydration, and more.

“Finally, mixing your pre-workout with water helps increase the bioavailability of the ingredients, which should make it more effective if you’re taking it before your workout.”
