United reduces service to four Asia cities coronavirus

United will reduce capacity to Tokyo Narita, Osaka,
Singapore and Seoul as the Covid-19 coronavirus takes an increasing toll on
Asian travel demand. The carrier has also extended cancellations of mainland
China and Hong Kong service.

United will cancel its flights from Los Angeles and Houston
to Narita from March 8 through April 24 and will also end its Chicago-Narita
route on March 8, 19 days before that Chicago service was already slated to be
moved Tokyo’s Haneda Airport.  In
addition, United will reduce Newark-Narita from weekly to five days per week
for April.

The carrier is also reducing service between San Francisco
and Osaka, Singapore, Seoul and Taipei. San Francisco is United’s only U.S
mainland gateway each of those cities, though it does also serve Osaka from the
U.S. territory of Guam.

To Singapore, United will reduce San Francisco service from
twice daily to daily from March 8 through April 30. To Seoul, service during
those same dates will be dropped from daily to three-times weekly. To Osaka,
the carrier will reduce San Francisco service from daily to five-times weekly
during April. And on the Taipei route, United will switch from a Boeing
777-300 to the smaller Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner during March and April.

United also said Friday that it has extended cancellations
of all service to Beijing, Shanghai, Chengdu and Hong Kong to April 30. The
carrier had earlier suspended those routes through March 28.

United has the largest Asia network among the Big 3 U.S. carriers,
meaning it has been the one most affected by the Covid-19 outbreak in Asia.
