Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall & husband Prince Charles clash over this form of travel

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are no strangers to travel, venturing across the UK and around the world frequently for both royal duties and leisure time. However, there is one form of travel Prince Charles is said to frequent fairly often, which Camilla is reportedly “not a lover” of.

Reports suggest that the Royal Train is a mode of transport that the prince and his wife do not share the same affinity for.

According to a 2008 insight by the Daily Mail “Charles is the most frequent and regular passenger”, meanwhile Camilla “unlike her husband, is not a lover of train travel.”

However, on occasions where the Duchess does join Prince Charles, she is given the maximum comfort.

An “eighth carriage is attached for her use” which is said to be decorated specifically to her tastes.

It is then joined to Prince Charles’ two personal carriages.

Reports state that Camilla’s carriage is decorated “pink” with Bird’s-Eye Maplewood panelling to match that of her husband’s.

She also benefits from blackout curtains which are drawn in the evening to block out any light which may filter into her quarters during the night.

Camilla is not the only member of the Royal Family who isn’t as keen on rail travel.

Prince Phillip has also spoken out about his aversion to travelling by train in the past.

According to author Robert Hardman, on a 1952 trip with the Queen which was undertaken mostly by train, the Duke described the experience as making him feel like “a poached egg”.

“If it was snug and well insulated against the increasingly bracing weather, the Duke found it faintly claustrophobic,” said Hardman.

“‘I feel like a poached egg. I just can’t breathe on trains,’ he announced as he disembarked in Vancouver.”

Trains are not the only point of contention for the Royals though.

While train travel might not be Camilla’s favourite, there is another form of travel that is said to leave her feeling uneasy.

According to a Clarence House spokesman, the Duchess is actually quite scared of flying.

The spokesman said: “The Duchess does not like flying but I think she sometimes has to embrace that fear and get on with it.”

This is reportedly why she chose to cut short an Australia trip in 2018.

Appearing on ITV’s This Morning previously, the Duchess admitted to her fear of air travel.

The Speakmans, a husband and wife team who help people get over their fear, spoke to her during her appearance on the show.

They later said: “Can you believe that the Duchess admitted that she’s not too keen on flying!

“So we did obviously tell her that if she’d like our help – on the show obviously – we will help her.”
