Airlines have ramped up cleaning measures in the midst of the coronavirus pandemic, with new disinfecting regimes being employed before every departure. However, one anonymous airline worker has revealed some flights have always been cleaner than others.
Posting to Reddit, the commenter explained: “I certainly can’t speak for every station and every airline regarding cleanliness, but, I worked the closing shift for a while.
“We would get six RONs (remain over nights) nightly and, after offloading pax and bags, we would: thoroughly clean the galley and lav, vacuum the floors, clean out the seat backs, and wipe down the tray tables with disinfectant.
“Remember: unless it’s the first flight of the day, there have been people – perhaps several flights’ worth – on that aircraft too, and there’s not enough time during the day to do any more than pick up big pieces of trash.
“Aircraft, however, are cleaned nightly, and aircraft that terminate at hubs are thoroughly cleaned by a professional contractor.” [SIC]
Of course, since the coronavirus pandemic, most airlines are now ensuring every flight gets an enhanced clean down between every new load of passengers boarding.
Even so, it often is the case that a full deep clean can not be employed until the last flight of the day.
Luckily, new technology means that most anti-virus cleaning agents have been developed to last around 24 hours.
British Airways is just one of the many big-name global carriers enforcing such measures to ensure passenger and crew safety.

The airline explains planes are cleaned from “nose to tail”.
“Every key surface is disinfected after every flight and we clean our aircraft from nose to tail every day,” states the British Airways website.
“We sanitise key surfaces before every flight, from your seat to your screen, seat buckle and tray tables.”
The airline is also ensuring air is of the highest quality onboard.
“In the cabin, air is completely replaced every 2 to 3 minutes, passing through HEPA filters,” BA explains.
“HEPA filters remove microscopic bacteria and virus clusters with over 99.9 percent efficiency, equivalent to hospital operating theatre standards.”
Similarly, the likes of Jet2 and easyJet are also assuring every surface is as clean as possible.
“Every one of our planes is disinfected nose to tail by a professional aircraft cleaning company every day,” assures Jet2.
“On top of this, we regularly use a process called fogging, where we deep clean our planes with a long-lasting antiviral and antibacterial spray to make sure every surface is sanitised.
“And they’re all kitted out with HEPA air filtration systems like those used in surgical theatres.
“When the planes are in action, these filters keep the air fresh and bacteria-free by removing 99.97 percent of viruses every few minutes.”
easyJet, meanwhile, explains new measures, in line with the World Health Organisation (WHO) include: “The additional cleaning and disinfection procedures for aircraft cabins on top of an existing daily aircraft cleaning schedule with every aircraft subject to a daily disinfection process which provides surface protection from viruses that lasts for at least 24 hours.”
