Hand luggage: Avoid this item to beat Jet2 bag weight restrictions as holidays resume

Jet2 flights and holidays are due to resume from July 15, with Britons across the nation packing their bags in preparation. However, hand luggage guidelines remain in place which, if flouted, could result in excess fees at the airport.

Jet2 currently allows passengers to bring one item of hand luggage “free of charge”, as long as it weighs no more than 10kg.

Travellers may also bring one additional personal item, which Jet2 specifies as “a handbag, laptop bag or airport purchase.”

For those hoping to save costs and travel hand luggage only, however, staying within the weight restriction can pose a problem.

Luckily, savvy travellers have come up with their own ways of packing efficiently while skirting around the weight guidelines.

In a Reddit forum dedicated to hand luggage packing tips, one holidaymaker revealed the item they never bother packing for their trip.

It turns out, this could be the key to tipping the scales in your favour.

“Don’t carry any toiletries. Like, at all, except for extremely necessary or expensive things. not even travel-sized,” advised the traveller.

Toiletries pose two threats to luggage; not only do they often heighten the weight of a bag, but they may also defy the liquid guidelines if travellers aren’t careful.

Hand luggage policy, which has been in place since 2006, specifies that liquids must amount to no more than 100ml per item.

“There are restrictions for the carriage of liquids through airport security in hand luggage,” Jet2 explains.

“All liquids, aerosols, and gels must be presented for screening in containers of 100ml or less, and within a clear, resealable plastic bag of no more than 1 litre in capacity.

“Anything exceeding these requirements will need to be placed into your hold baggage and checked in.”

As a result, many travellers are now avoiding taking liquids onboard all together.

“I never bring my own shampoo or anything anymore,” added another Reddit user.

Holidaymakers flying with Jet2 could be charged an excess baggage fee of £12 per kg at the airport if their luggage is found to be heavier than the specified weight.

“Please note that no single item of baggage may weigh more than 32kg,” adds Jet2.

Hand luggage must also fit into certain dimensions, with bags no larger than 56cm x 45cm x 25cm, including any wheels and handles.

“If your hand luggage weighs more or is larger than this, it will need to be checked into the aircraft hold, and you may have to pay an additional charge,” states the Jet2 website.

In welcome news to hopeful holidaymakers, Jet2 announced it would recommence operations to some hotspot as of July 15, 2020.

In a statement, the airline said: “In view of the ongoing travel restrictions that are in place as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, we have taken the decision to recommence our flights and holidays programme on July 15.”

Jet2 is working in line with current government guidelines, including the quarantine-free list, to ensure Britons do not face a mandatory period of self-isolation either at their destination or when they return home.

A statement on the Jet2 website notes: “In line with government guidance, flights from Scotland to mainland Spain, the Balearics and the Canary Islands are only available from 25 July 2020. Also, due to travel restrictions, flights to Faro in Portugal, Funchal in Madeira and Larnaca and Paphos in Cyprus are only available from 1 August 2020.”
