Budget airlines are particularly alluring when it comes to low-cost tickets. However, the price soon starts to mount when you consider adding on excess hand luggage and checked bags.

This is why many holidaymakers opt to go travel light, with just their basic hand luggage allowance.

However, while this is great budgeting, there is a simple, yet costly, mistake that could catch you out.

One frequent flier revealed the tip in a Reddit forum and urged other travellers not to succumb to this assumption.

“Different airlines have different restrictions,” wrote the anonymous traveller.

“Don’t assume that your carry-on is acceptable on one airline just because it was fine on another.”

Indeed, every airline has its own strict baggage policy, and they rarely match that of another airline.

Ryanair, for example, allows all passengers on a basic ticket one small personal bag which must fit under the seat in front.

However, customers can purchase “priority” which allows then an additional second larger bag up to 10kg in weight and 55cm x 40cm x 20cm, as well as early boarding.

easyJet, on the other hand, does not set out a weight restriction for hand luggage.

This bag must measure no more than 56cm x 45cm x 25cm.

Jet2 passengers may carry on board one piece of hand luggage free of charge as long as it weighs no more than 10kg and is no larger than 56cm x 45cm x 25cm.

Wizz Air passengers can also bring on board one piece of hand luggage, measuring up to 40cm x 30cm x 20cm.It must weigh no more than 10kg.

The good news is, for passengers struggling to make it all fit, the travel enthusiast who posted to Reddit also shared their top tips for keeping luggage light.

“If possible, choose a soft material like canvass,” they recommended.

“I’ve got a piece of metal hand-luggage which is millimetre accurate for the size allowance – yet it still wouldn’t squeeze into their measuring tray.”They continued: “Handbags are often counted as part of your allowance.

“That is, they must fit into your rucksack/case.”While airlines such as British Airways allow for one item of hand luggage plus a personal item, which included a handbag or laptop case, many of the budget airlines do not.

For passengers at check-in suddenly in a predicament, the traveller has a helpful insight.

“Coats are usually not part of your allowance,” they explained.“Stuff your pockets full of whatever you can to reduce the size of your carry-on.”
