Despite the ongoing concerns over Omicron, many Britons are still likely to be jetting off over the festive period. One thing that remains consistent regardless of whether you are flying internationally or domestically is hand luggage rules.

Security restrictions are in place for those travelling by aeroplane, with select items banned from luggage.

Travelling with cabin bags only can be a cost-effective way to fly, but if you are hoping to pack Christmas presents for friends and family into your bags, you may have to reconsider what items you wrap up this year.

According to Adam Ewart, CEO of Send My Bag, among the most common items to catch people out at airport security are those containing liquids.

These rules could spell trouble for those hoping to gift a bottle of fizz or a new perfume.

Mr Ewart said: “The 100ml rule means, unfortunately, bottles of booze or larger cosmetics won’t be gifts hand luggage only travellers can bring to the airport.”

According to Gov.uk: “There are restrictions on the amount of liquids you can take in your hand luggage. If possible, pack liquids in your hold baggage (luggage that you check-in).”

However, it isn’t just the likes of booze and cosmetics that might be banned from your hand luggage.

Gov.uk also lists “liquid or semi-liquid foods, for example, jam, honey and syrups”, which rules out any festive preserves you may have been hoping to gift.

Gov.uk adds: “If you do take liquids in your hand luggage containers must hold no more than 100ml, containers must be in a single, transparent, resealable plastic bag, which holds no more than a litre and measures approximately 20cm x 20cm and contents must fit comfortably inside the bag so it can be sealed.”

Can you get around liquid rules?

Unfortunately, hand luggage rules are in place for safety and security reasons, which means staff will not permit you to carry liquids amounting to more than 100ml.

However, Mr Ewart shared a handy tip with Express.co.uk that could help this Christmas.

He said: “On the upside, where do you see more booze and cosmetics on sale than anywhere else? The airport!

“We wouldn’t recommend choosing this option without doing your research, but look up the shops’ websites or call them to find out how their prices stack up.”

If certain gift items end up being a good deal at the airport, Mr Ewart recommends snapping them up from duty-free once you are through security.

He added: “There are also often vouchers and rewards available that may mean you’re not only able to pick up items that you couldn’t have brought with you, but potentially at a lower cost and they won’t count towards your hand luggage allowance.”
